What are CO2 (botanical) extracts, how are they made and why are they different ?
✶ CO2 extraction is a superior method of extraction to all other extraction methods including cold pressed and macerated oils. CO2 extracts are also sometimes called Supercritical or Superfluid extracts but they are all the same thing. The total lipid essence from dried, botanical matter, extracted under (cold) pressure by CO2 liquid gas extraction.
CO2 extracts are produced by putting plant material such as leaves,
roots, bark, wood, flowers and seeds into a sterile steel drum. This drum is a part
of a closed system completely devoid of heat, light and oxygen.
CO2 Extracts are very rich in colour and aroma.
✶ By changing the pressure inside the drum, CO2 gas is turned into a highly efficient non toxic liquid solvent.
✶ The drum then spins and the plants bio-active properties are extracted by centrifuge. The extracts are concentrated and rich in colour and aroma.
After a period of time the drum stops spinning and the pressure is
changed forcing the liquid CO2 to turn back into a gas which is stored
and used again. because it's a closed system, no gas escapes making CO2
extraction an environmentally sound method of producing superior grade,
concentrated seed oils, essential oils and herbal extracts.
